March 6, 2020
March is finally here and the sun is beginning to move some snow which means the Golf Season in the Nelson and Kootenay Lake area is close to getting underway. I don't know about you but I sure have been dreaming quite a bit lately about that first round of golf for the season. Of course Mother Nature always makes the final call as to opening day however we are going to stay optimistic and keep our sights set on an early April kick off to our 2020 golf season! I am just excited as I'm sure you are to get things rolling on another season of golf! It's hard to believe this will be my 9 season here as Balfour's PGA of Canada Professional. Clearly my family and I love it here and remain committed to this beautiful facility!
From a Golf Operations perspective, I sure am going to be happy to hear from a lot of our regulars once our Preseason Promotion gets underway. I'm currently in the office Monday - Friday from 8am to 4pm. Feel free to call or stop in anytime even if you just want to talk some golf! The MASTERS is just around the corner and you know this guy is getting excited!
Every year when I return to the office, I come with the intent of adding at least one new event to our roster. At times my ambition has been trumped by time constraints however this year I am committed so expect to see the addition of a Men's and a Ladies Match Play event this spring. We will also be seeing some significant modifications to our Men's Night structure this year. Details on both are in the works and will be released sometime toward the end of the month or early in April.
Our golf shop inventory is set to start showing up pretty soon. Expect to see the return of two of our most popular apparel brands in Antigua for Men and Dexim for Ladies as well as the addition of a couple of new brands including Level Wear and Cutter & Buck. I have also switched things up in the Men's head wear department this year so expect to see nice selection of AHEAD head wear! The Cleveland and Srixon brands will continue to hold a strong presence in our Golf Shop this year in the wedge, putter ball and glove departments.
There will be some new faces occupying our Golf Operations department this year as we have unfortunately lost two fixtures from the past number of seasons. Rob Sibbet and Brendan Watts have both moved on from the BGC team and their presence will be greatly missed behind our Golf Shop counter this year. I've just launched job postings for the coming season so on the chance that you, or anyone you know might be looking for some work come April, please feel free to reach out to me over the coming weeks.
I'm sure you'll agree with me that our on course experience the past couple of seasons has improved considerably! Not only have turf conditions been taken to the next level, the work that is being done outside of the intended playing areas has been massive. The expansion of our club house putting green that was installed last September is another exiting improvement that we'll get to enjoy later this year. All in all, I couldn't be happier working with our now not so new Superintendent Larry Olson. I'm so looking forward to seeing what great ideas he comes up with as we move forward!
Thank you for your continued support of the Balfour Golf Course. I look forward to seeing your smiling face hunting flags in Balfour this season.
