Superintendents May Update

May 7, 2021

Happy May Balfour Golfers,

For those of you that haven’t had the opportunity to golf Balfour yet this year,  I’m happy to report we are in great spring condition.  Our greens came through the winter with no disease damage, and only a minimal amount of ice damage that is nearly all healed.  Any areas in the rough or on fairways that had disease damage are well on their way to full recovery.

We were hit with another wind storm 2 weeks ago, but your hard working crew managed to get the course safe and playable in only a couple days.  We will be continuing to clean downed trees in the bush as time permits, but all play areas are clear.

Thank you to all of you for following COVID-19 protocols which is why golf is allowed to continue operating when many other business are being forced to close.  Please remember that your actions do make a difference to the golf industry.

You may have noticed that all of our rental carts now come equipped with a bunker rake on board.  Please be considerate to other golfers and rake bunkers after use.  The pro shop staff sanitizes the rakes and entire rental cart after each use.  For those of you with private carts, I am giving anyone who wants one a bunker rake to keep on their cart, just respond to this email or give me a call if you would like one.

Speaking of power carts, please follow cart signs and stay on paths whenever possible.  All it takes is for one or two carts to make tracks across the grass and dozens more after will follow those tracks.  As soon as we get any extended heat, those cart tracks across the grass will brown out and then burn up.  If you have a medical condition that requires you to drive closer to your ball, please ask for a blue flag at the pro shop and they will be happy to provide you with one.

If you are a smoker, please dispose of your cigar and cigarette butts in a responsible manner.  My staff has been instructed not to touch any butts, so if you throw yours on the ground or in a bunker, that’s where it will stay, so consider it littering.

I have been asked what my plans are for weeds, especially dandelions.  I will try to control all weeds on key play areas but for the good of the environment, I will be allowing weeds to go through their natural process in out of play and rough areas.

Thank you to all golfers who have been using divot mix, repairing ball marks and replacing divots.  Your efforts definitely make a difference.

If you have any questions regarding course maintenance please feel free to shoot me an email.

Stay safe,

Larry Olson, Superintendent
